Impact on rural BC’s socio-economic development

According to 2009 figures from BC Stats, many communities in the province are heavily dependent on forestry and forest product related activities. 2006 BC census numbers indicate that one-third of all communities generate 20% or more of their total after-tax income from the forest sector, with some as high as 45%. Each year BC STATS reports on the vulnerability of local communities to the level of activity in forest product related industries. The interior and northern regions of BC are consistently the most vulnerable. A new opportunity for forest products in the clean energy sector is an exciting opportunity.
